Crochet experts?

While taking a break from my craft work, I still had to keep my hands busy, so I decided to crochet myself a hat and scarf. I haven't crocheted in a few years, but the scarf turned out fairly well. I have started the hat, and for some reason can not get past row 1!
If any of you know what I'm doing wrong, please let me know. Here is the pattern: http://www.coatsandclark.com/NR/rdonlyres/EB93AD9A-2CDE-4CD8-856A-957848A778C8/56626/SB300007.pdf

It's supposed to be easy, but for some reason, I can't get it right.
On the hat pattern, I have completed Row 1, but when I turn and begin Row 2, my rows aren't joined and it doesn't tell me to join with a slip stitch or anything. I'm sure I'm missing something very simple...

I appreciate any help ~ thanks!

  1. HI Lana,
That's kind of an odd pattern....normally, you would join to the first dc, chain 3, and start the new row with the directions. (Instead of turning, and going back and forth). But, then at the end, you will have to hand stitch a seam up the back. Until then, you will just have a flat piece. Odd, most hats you just go around in circles, joining each one to the first dc. Hope this helps. (I'm terrible with instructions!) You'll have to show us when you're finished.
    Good Luck,
    Sandra B.

  2. Hope you get it worked out, Lana. (I have 2 left thumbs when it comes to sewing. :)
    Happy New Year!!

  3. I'm not a great crocheter, but I do think everything is done so the puff stitches will be on the front, so you have to keep turning, which does mean things are not done "in the ROUND"... and the directions do say "sew back seam"... :o)

  4. LOL! Thanks! I can't believe I missed the end that says "sew back seam". See? I KNEW I was missing something. I did try to do my own thing and join each round, chain 3, turn and go the other way. It may not turn out quite like it's meant to, but at least I'm getting lots of practice! I will share pics when it's finished, but it really will look like it's done by a beginner. Oh well, at least it's for me and not a gift!
    Thanks again!
