Ribbons & Sunrises

I'll tell you how the sun rose,

A ribbon at a time.

The steeples swam in amethyst,

The news like squirrels ran.

The hills untied their bonnets,

The bobolinks begun.

Then I said softly to myself,

"That must have been the sun!"

But how he set, I know not.

There seemed a purple stile

Which little yellow boys and girls

Were climbing all the while

Till when they reached the other side,

A dominie in gray

Put gently up the evening bars,

And led the flock away.

Emily Dickinson

I love that poem and think of it often when I am working on silk ribbon embroidery ~ and that beautiful sunrise is compliments of my sister. Early one February morning while on my way to her home, these glorious ribbons of color were rippling across the sky. I didn't have my camera with me, so when I got to her house, she said she had been watching it from her back porch and took several pictures and had emailed them to me.

This week I'm working as much as possible on my needlework, getting ready for an arts & crafts festival Saturday. Though I do enjoy designing and making the flowers bloom straight from my ribbon and needle, my heart just doesn't seem to be in it this year as before. The past several months of dealing with the passing of my Mom and the illness of one of my sisters seems to have taken a toll on my creative drive and is part of the reason I'll be taking a break from work for a few months. I'll be taking time for my family and myself and hope to come back late summer refreshed, rejuvinated, and ready to create and work again. I will continue with my blog, so be sure to check in or email me ~ I enjoy hearing from all the wonderful people I've met while blogging. 1. How beautiful... the photo and the poem. The poem is very descriptive and the photo really captures the "ribbon" effect.
Your gorgeous ribbon embroidery pillows are sure to go quickly during your show. Please take lots of photos!

I hope you'll be able to rest and be refreshed after your summer break.

  6. Lana, your work is always wonderful and such an inspiration. I know how you must be feeling right now, I am in a similar situation with mom's illness and two dear friends and club members who have passed away. I found it hard to create and have only just started a little lately.
Have a good rest, I will keep checking your blog.

  8. Thank you ladies. I'm sorry to say I just cancelled my booth at the show, not due to problems exactly, I guess you could say just life in general. But things are working out and all is well. Lana
